Why is Diversity, Equity and Inclusion important in Health Care?
Diversity in any workplace means having a workforce comprised of multiple races, ages, genders, ethnicities, and orientations. In other words, it refers to when the medical and administrative staff of a healthcare facility represents a wide range of experiences and backgrounds.
Think of the countless people who enter hospitals and clinics every day looking for help. They include people from every race, creed, gender, and age—a melting pot of humanity. Research has shown that if these diverse patients see themselves within the healthcare workforce, they are more likely to trust their healthcare provider. They are also better able to communicate their condition, more likely to understand and follow their prescribed treatment, and more satisfied with their healthcare.
The benefits of embracing DEI in a health care setting include:
- higher employee morale
- better care for diverse populations
- better recruitment
- higher employee retention
- stronger individual motivation
- Better results and health outcomes
